Smell of burning electrical — what to do now

Burning plastic or wiring smell is an urgent electrical condition. If you see smoke or fire, leave and call 911. Otherwise shut off the affected breaker if safe and dry, ventilate, and call a licensed electrician immediately.

Quick answers

  • Smoke/fire → evacuate, 911.
  • No smoke but burning smell → breaker off if safe, call electrician now.
  • Do not investigate inside the panel.
  • Water + burning smell → dual emergency; stay out of wet areas.

When to use this guide

You smell burning near outlets, switches, appliances, or the panel.

Immediate actions

Get people and pets to safety if smoke is present. Cut power at the breaker only from a dry location. Do not use water on electrical fires. Call an electrician (and 911 when appropriate).

Our lane

If a plumbing failure caused wetting that led to this hazard, we handle water shutoff and mitigation after the scene is electrically safe.

Failure modes to avoid

Waiting overnight

Heat faults can progress quickly — treat burning smell as now.
