Boil-water advisory: what homeowners should do

A boil-water advisory means your utility is telling you the drinking water may not be safe until further notice — often after a main break, treatment issue, or storm-related disruption. Answer-first: follow the utility’s instructions for drinking and cooking; then handle plumbing-adjacent items (ice makers, filters, fixtures) so you do not recontaminate the house when the advisory lifts. Cherry Blossom Plumbing does not replace utility notices — we help with the home plumbing response.

Quick answers

  • Drink/cook per utility guidance (boil or bottled) until the advisory is lifted.
  • Skip ice makers and refrigerator water until lines are flushed per utility advice.
  • Do not claim the municipal water is “always unsafe” — respond to the actual notice.
  • Private wells after floods are a separate testing path (health department).

When to use this guide

When your water utility issues a boil-water notice, or when you are flushing the house after an advisory is lifted.

Definition

Advisories are utility-driven public health notices. Plumbing contractors help with filters, fixtures, and post-advisory flushing — not with declaring water safe.

When to act inside the home

During the advisory: avoid ice/dispensers, consider bypassing filters that can harbor contamination, and keep pets/kids from untreated tap water per utility guidance. After lift: flush cold taps, run ice makers to discard ice, and replace filter cartridges if the utility recommends it.

Failure modes

Using the ice maker the whole time, then serving that ice after the advisory ends. Or ignoring a well that took floodwater — wells need testing, not vibes.

Action

Bookmark your utility’s alert page. If you need help with filtration, softener bypass, or post-advisory fixture issues, request service. For leak waste during drought messaging, see the leak-fix act page.

FAQs

Can you tell me if my water is safe?

Only your utility (or a lab for private wells) can clear an advisory. We help with plumbing steps around the notice.

Do filters make boiling unnecessary?

Not unless the utility or filter manufacturer explicitly says so for that contaminant. Many refrigerator filters are not a boil-water substitute.
