Is Northern Virginia water actually a problem?

Honest answer: it's moderately hard. Not the worst in the country, but hard enough to scale up water heaters, spot your glassware, and stiffen laundry over time. On top of hardness, a lot of homes here taste chlorine, and older neighborhoods can pick up sediment from aging mains. None of that means your water is unsafe. It means your water can be better, and your equipment can last longer.

What about PFAS?

PFAS, the so-called forever chemicals, are a real topic in the DC region, and worth taking seriously without the scare tactics. Start with facts: your water utility publishes a water quality report every year with its actual PFAS results. Look yours up before you buy anything. If the numbers bother you, or you just want a margin of safety for drinking and cooking water, a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink is the most proven fix. Certain certified carbon filters reduce PFAS too. We'll match the fix to your test results and your utility's report, not to a sales quota.

Softener, whole-home filter, or reverse osmosis: which one do you need?

A water softener fixes hardness. Scale in the water heater, spots on dishes, crusty faucet aerators, dry skin after showers. It treats every tap in the house, but it doesn't change taste much.

A whole-home filter fixes taste, smell, chlorine, and sediment at every tap. It's the "my water tastes like a pool" fix. It doesn't soften hard water.

Reverse osmosis is the deep clean for one tap, usually the kitchen. It handles the stuff you actually drink: taste, lead, PFAS, and more. It's the highest level of treatment, applied where it counts.

Softener and reverse osmosis systems get a flat quote after your free test, because the right size depends on what's in your water and how much of it your household uses. You approve the price before we start, and it includes the permit when one's required.
